Teach Me What You Need
(Written by Elizabeth Riley, to me;
the only poem I've ever been given)
Tests of integrity tear, torment, and try
While searching suffocates - saddening me to cry.
Alone, the pain plunges - searing a path of peace.
I have only myself to use as a release.
Routine refuses to yield to my pleas -
In hopeful expectations I get down on my knees.
God, granting guidance, gives me the strength
To recognize my burden and tolerate it at length.
Dialing and smiling enfolds me with warm-woven bliss.
Oh! the eager excitement enveloped in each tender kiss!
Soft silken words spoken splendidly, silent and smooth...
Such comfort I find in knowing you're trying to soothe!
Sharing and caring come more easily when laced
With my wholehearted trust - which I know is well-placed.
With confidence, then, I can chance what I had to hide
And you so willingly take away the hurtin' inside.
How can I be more of a friend, less demanding?
Time and patience pave the road to understanding.
Do you, too, experience the inner warmth I feel
When spending time together, over coffee or a meal?
Teach me what you need, and how I can help you.
When I learn to be your friend, we'll start growing closer, anew.
